The Martumpol tradition is a sacred unifying procession in Toba Batak customs that unites two clans through the Dalihan Na Tolu rule. The procession, which includes the giving of signs, the handing over of betel nuts, and the discussion of sinamot, reflects the values of family, respect, and social responsibility. Symbols such as betel nuts convey the meaning of requests for blessings and fertility. As a socio-cultural foundation, Martumpol strengthens inter-clan cohesion and serves as a sign of collective commitment to building a new household. It also serves as a key to preserving Toba Batak cultural identity amidst the tide of modernization.
